FxMurphy was born in Dublin in 1964 and studied Art at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He lives and works on Sherkin Island, Co Cork.

He uses a variety of media in his practice but is primarily a painter. The Irish Civil War is a recurring subject matter in his work, as is the apparent tension between myth and history, violence and civil society.

He has taken part in numerous group shows (e.g., “Living Landscape” symposium/exhibition 2005, “Tipperary Exposed” 2007, “Three Men in a Pea Green Boat” 2014) and undertaken solo exhibitions at the West Cork Arts Centre (“Coalfireeffect” 2002) and in Co Tipperary.
